Tomas D.W.

Tomas D.W. Friedmann (1925-2012) was one of the most important traveling photographers of the last century.
Born in pre-Nazi Germany from a family of Jewish origins (his mother a photographer, his father a renowned modernist architect), emigrated and raised in British Palestine since 1933, after the war and many vicissitudes Friedmann moved to New York, where he founded the PIP PHOTOS INC agency and obtains US citizenship. His social, naturalistic and anthropological photographs, taken during a sort of continuous journey across the five continents, from the 1950s to the 1980s, have appeared in hundreds of books and newspapers and on the covers of some of the most prestigious magazines of the era. Creative and adventurous entrepreneur, his network of collaborators extends to almost all countries of the world and finds in the paparazzi of the Roman dolce vita the accomplices of epochal worldly scoops. His reports on black Africa stand out as icons in international newspapers: from missions of the Nobel Peace Princes to wildlife hunters, from tribal healers to the contradictions of apartheid. His autobiography Globetrotter in the Sixties (published posthumously, an excerpt of which is reported in this book) is a concentrate of adventures and reflections from the individual micro-cosmos to the universal macro-cosmos.
